Stress and Your Self-Talk by Honorée Corpron October 19, 2008

I sat with a client yesterday and while we were discussing balancing life and career, she broke down in tears. She runs a successful company here in valley, is married, has two children, aging parents, and seemingly an endless list of people she is not only responsible for, but continually worries about. A higher level of stress than she wants, for sure!
Can you relate? I sure can.
I have noticed that it seems we all live a little too close to the line when it comes to managing stress. The biggest contributor to whether its handled with ease and grace is seemingly a small thing – it can all come down to what we’re saying when we talk to ourselves. Our self-talk can be the difference between having a “great day” and a “constantly challenging, I’m pushing a boulder uphill, when is this day over” day.
To begin with, my client’s language included some “I am” statements that were not serving her. “I am stressed.” “I am a worrier.” “I am powerless to external factors that determine whether I reach my goals.”
I know this to be true: the “I am” is the most powerful statement a person can make. Whether you are saying “I am brilliant” or “I am an idiot” your subconscious mind carries out these most personal of commands by creating the corresponding reality to your thoughts.
One way to make sure you are consistently moving in the right direction – toward what you want, instead of away from it (right?!), is to monitor your self-talk, starting with your “I am” statements.
Start listening to your internal dialog. You may be surprised to find just how often you say negative things to yourself … about you. You can use a journal to record your negative self-talk and “I am” statements for one day. The results will shock you (and not in a good way!). You will be surprised how many negative thoughts you are having, and how often you say something negative to yourself about you!
Once you have identified these less-than-positive statements, you can replace them with positive, confident and empowering thoughts, words and actions. Remember nothing we experience comes labeled; we label it. The power to choose is yours.

Ali Brown: 7 Marketing Lessons I Learned From the Muscleheads at Gold’s Gym October 15, 2008

Can I share a secret with you?
Many years ago, I almost chose a career in fitness. In my 20s, I modeled for Reebok and Ironman magazine, made it to the final round for hosting a fitness TV show, and I moonlit as an aerobics instructor and personal trainer for several years while I figured out how to get out of my day job in publishing.
Now that I make a great living online, I still make time for my health. And I’m lucky to live close to the most famous gym in the world: Gold’s Gym at Venice Beach, California. On a daily basis, I’m surrounded by bodybuilding legends like Lou Ferrigno and various men named “Gunther,” athletes like Kobe Bryant and Lisa Leslie, and celebs like The Rock. The place is an absolute circus, and I enjoy the entertainment factor.
When I first joined Gold’s several years ago, I didn’t pay much attention to the “muscleheads” – the professional bodybuilders. But I’ve come to realize they can teach us a lot about marketing and business success. Here are 7 lessons we can all learn from.
1. Hang around people whom you want to be like.
Bodybuilders and aspiring bodybuilders from all over the area come to the Venice Gold’s because it’s the home of bodybuilding. I know a few bodybuilders who drive almost an hour just to work out there. Sure, they could exercise at their neighborhood Bally’s, but instead they make the trip to their Mecca every day through the arduous Los Angeles traffic.
Why? They know that when you hang around people who are doing what you want to do, you automatically have a much greater chance of success. The furious energy at Gold’s is undeniable as soon as you walk in the door. You’re surrounded by world-class competitors, gold medalists, and celebrities. It’s not only motivating and inspiring, but there’s a wealth of knowledge surrounding you as well.
Who are YOU hanging around? (Think about it.)
2. Consistency is the key for long-term success.
Bodybuilders know that a body is built over a long term. And even if they take some time off, they’ll bounce back quickly because of all the training they’ve done over the years. It’s called “muscle memory” – your body remembers your shape and snaps back into place.
In the same way, our clients and customers have “marketing memory.” That is, as long as we’re in front of them on a regular basis, they’ll remember who we are – even if we take a break. (And there’s no better way to stay in front of them than publishing an e-zine!)
3. Ups and downs are a part of the process.
Bodybuilders know that success comes in cycles. It’s physically damaging for them to try to be on “full force” more than a few times every year. They know their limits, and they push them, but they don’t break them.
Marketing has cycles as well. You can hit it hard for a while, then ease back for a bit. Don’t worry when there’s a “down.” Just make sure to immediately follow it with an “up”. Get back on your marketing schedule or mix it up and do something different.
4. Hard work is part of the game.
Bodybuilders don’t wake up and say, “I don’t feel like working out today.” They just do it. It becomes part of their schedule, part of their life. And that ensures their success.
How many of us secretly wish our success would be handed to us on a silver platter? I’m all about attracting success on whatever level we can, but hey, let’s realize there is work involved. The solution is to make the hard work FUN by doing what you love to do and delegating what you don’t.
5. Model others who are already doing what you want to do.
Bodybuilders don’t try to invent their own training programs from scratch. They look at what the top competitors are doing, and they do the same thing. From weightlifting to cardio to diet, they’ve got it down to a precise formula.
Don’t reinvent the wheel when there are others who are already racing along. Find other business owners who are doing what you want to do, and model them. Important: Don’t model ones who are doing it half-assed. Model the best, the ones who are experiencing the immense success that you dream of!
6. Find a mentor or coach for faster results.
I don’t know of any champion who got to where he/she did alone. Every bodybuilding competitor hires a trainer or a coach who has been there before and can walk them through every step of the way. Does this cost them a lot of money? You bet. But they don’t look at what it costs. They look at what it’s WORTH. They’re fast forwarding their success, and that is priceless.
I know many entrepreneurs who have wasted thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars on websites, programs, and training that got them nowhere or pointed them in the wrong direction. Don’t make that mistake – I’ve been there. Stop struggling and invest in someone to show you the way – the right way – the first time. (Not sure where to start? Join my Marketing & Motivation Mastermind.)
7. Show off what you’ve got!
You can be sure the bodybuilding gurus at Gold’s aren’t meek about their successes. They show off their hard work with outfits that emphasize their assets. (Oh, the stories I could tell you about some of the costumes there! Lace catsuit, anyone?)
Even if you don’t have it all (yet), show off what you DO have. Strut your best stuff and toot your own horn. You’re doing the world a disservice if you don’t let us all know what you and your business can offer.

10 Skills You Need to Succeed at Almost Anything October 14, 2008
Posted by Abigail in Uncategorized.comments closed
What does it take to succeed? A positive attitude? Well, sure, but that’s hardly enough. The Law of Attraction? The Secret? These ideas might act as spurs to action, but without the action itself, they don’t do much.
Success, however it’s defined, takes action, and taking good and appropriate action takes skills. Some of these skills (not enough, though) are taught in school (not well enough, either), others are taught on the job, and still others we learn from general life experience.
Below is a list of general skills that will help anyone get ahead in practically any field, from running a company to running a gardening club. Of course, there are skills specific to each field as well – but my concern here is with the skills that translate across disciplines, the ones that can be learned by anyone in any position.
1. Public Speaking
The ability to speak clearly, persuasively, and forcefully in front of an audience – whether an audience of 1 or of thousands – is one of the most important skills anyone can develop. People who are effective speakers come across as more comfortable with themselves, more confident, and more attractive to be around. Being able to speak effectively means you can sell anything – products, of course, but also ideas, ideologies, worldviews. And yourself – which means more opportunities for career advancement, bigger clients, or business funding.
2. Writing
Writing well offers many of the same advantages that speaking well offers: good writers are better at selling products, ideas, and themselves than poor writers. Learning to write well involves not just mastery of grammar but the development of the ability to organize one’s thoughts into a coherent form and target it to an audience in the most effective way possible. Given the huge amount of text generated by almost every transaction – from court briefs and legislation running into the thousands of pages to those foot-long receipts you get when you buy gum these days – a person who is a master of the written word can expect doors to open in just about every field.
3. Self-Management
If success depends of effective action, effective action depends on the ability to focus your attention where it is needed most, when it is needed most. Strong organizational skills, effective productivity habits, and a strong sense of discipline are needed to keep yourself on track.
4. Networking
Networking is not only for finding jobs or clients. In an economy dominated by ideas and innovation, networking creates the channel through which ideas flow and in which new ideas are created. A large network, carefully cultivated, ties one into not just a body of people but a body of relationships, and those relationships are more than just the sum of their parts. The interactions those relationships make possible give rise to innovation and creativity – and provide the support to nurture new ideas until they can be realized.
5. Critical Thinking
We are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands, of times more information on a daily basis than our great-grandparents were. Being able to evaluate that information, sort the potentially valuable from the trivial, analyze its relevance and meaning, and relate it to other information is crucial – and woefully under-taught. Good critical thinking skills immediately distinguish you from the mass of people these days.
6. Decision-Making
The bridge that leads from analysis to action is effective decision-making – knowing what to do based on the information available. While not being critical can be dangerous, so too can over-analyzing, or waiting for more information before making a decision. Being able to take in the scene and respond quickly and effectively is what separates the doers from the wannabes.
7. Math
You don’t have to be able to integrate polynomials to be successful. However, the ability to quickly work with figures in your head, to make rough but fairly accurate estimates, and to understand things like compound interest and basic statistics gives you a big lead on most people. All of these skills will help you to analyze data more effectively – and more quickly – and to make better decisions based on it.
8. Research
Nobody can be expected to know everything, or even a tiny fraction of everything. Even within your field, chances are there’s far more that you don’t know than you do know. You don’t have to know everything – but you should be able to quickly and painlessly find out what you need to know. That means learning to use the Internet effectively, learning to use a library, learning to read productively, and learning how to leverage your network of contacts – and what kinds of research are going to work best in any given situation.
9. Relaxation
Stress will not only kill you, it leads to poor decision-making, poor thinking, and poor socialization. So be failing to relax, you knock out at least three of the skills in this list – and really more. Plus, working yourself to death in order to keep up, and not having any time to enjoy the fruits of your work, isn’t really “success”. It’s obsession. Being able to face even the most pressing crises with your wits about you and in the most productive way is possibly the most important thing on this list.
10. Basic Accounting
It is a simple fact in our society that money is necessary. Even the simple pleasures in life, like hugging your child, ultimately need money – or you’re not going to survive to hug for very long. Knowing how to track and record your expenses and income is important just to survive, let alone to thrive. But more than that, the principles of accounting apply more widely to things like tracking the time you spend on a project or determining whether the value of an action outweighs the costs in money, time, and effort. It’s a shame that basic accounting isn’t a required part of the core K-12 curriculum.
What Else?
Surely there are more important skills I’m not thinking of (which is probably why I’m not telling Bill Gates what to do!) – what are they? What have I missed? What lessons have you learned that were key to your successes – and what have you ignored to your peril?

Money with Meaning: Living Your Life “On Purpose”
Why are you here? Why are you on the planet right now? Many people believe we each come into this life with a purpose, a reason for living. Considering that every element in nature has a specific purpose for existing, and we are an integral part of nature, it stands to reason that we have a purpose too.
Eastern philosophies submit that each of us has a job to do, a duty in life, and that the only way to find peace and fulfillment is to carry out your duty or “dharma” as it’s called. The philosophy states that to truly be happy you must learn to live in service, to live based on what you can give rather than only on what you can get; to live based “on purpose” rather than only “on outcome”.
The brilliant futurist, Buckminster Fuller said, “The purpose of our lives is to add value to the people of this generation and those that follow.” In short, to leave this world a better place than it was when you arrived. It could be in terms of adding convenience, education, entertainment, enlightenment, health, beauty, joy, humour, technology, or any other way you personally can serve other people or the planet.
Although many people believe they have a purpose, they often have a difficult time discovering their own reason for living. Because purpose holds such a spiritual sense, people tend to believe their purpose will somehow be handed down from the heavens. They wait and wait for some “burning bush” to tell them what to do. It’s true, a few “tuned-in” people do receive some type of message; some unmistakable calling. But the answer for most of us is that we actually have to “choose” our purpose. We are the ones who decide how we are best suited to serve.
Our choice, however, is not random. We each have unique abilities, inherent talents and strengths. We each have different interests and activities that bring us joy. We each have different experiences and issues from which we’ve learned, and we all have a different way in which we can best serve others. It is through these factors you “choose” your purpose.
Can your purpose change? Yes. More likely, however, is that your overall purpose remains the same, while the vehicle you use to provide your service may change on an ongoing basis. If your purpose is to teach, for example, you may teach your own children, teach in a school, become an author or a speaker or even be a consultant. Regardless of your vehicle, your dharma is to “teach”.
It takes courage to choose a purpose and even more courage to live your life based on it! Once you have purpose, you will have two essential elements for a truly happy life - money and meaning! In this way, you will become ‘rich’ in every sense of the word.
EXERCISE:
List your unique abilities, talents, strengths, interests and joys. From here choose an overall purpose for your life. Clarify it by writing it down. Then choose an initial vehicle with which you can serve people that is in alignment with your purpose. Begin today to live your life based on purpose.
Declarations:
I am here for a reason.
I have important work to do.
I live my life on purpose.

“In these scary times a lot of people are running around asking, “Why is this happening to me, where will I end up?”
They’ve given their power over to the economy and the crisis culture we live in.
But the miracle workers, and the millionaires, are asking different questions right now. They’re asking, “What am I making happen right now? What am I giving?”
The miracle workers and the millionaires and millions of people who will pull themselves out of this mess believe in control of their destiny. They’re adding value. And they’re not letting the excuse of a bad economy stop them from coming up with new ideas, new value, new products, and new business.
Miracle workers are just that — people working to make magic out of these tough times.
Join us. Keep your head high. Ask what you’re making happen and what you’re giving. Add more value now than you’ve ever added before.
GIVE and you shall receive. That’s a spiritual principle that overcomes all….even a rough economy.”
